"The Good Morrow", for Baritone and orchestra

Instrumentation2/2/1/1//1/0/0/0///hrp//strings, Baritone
Length8"
DifficultyCollege or community orchestra (a slighty difficult solo violin passage) and college-level Baritone.
CommentsAn approachable orchestral song on John Donne's famous love poem, "The Good Morrow". The piece will fit almost any occasion as the setting is as romantic as the poem. Although not functional tonality, the harmonic motion is grounded in D, and the orchestration lush with rather easy string parts. The vocal part is traditional, lyric and drawn from the composer's experience writing, accompianing, conducting and singing opera and art song. The piece begins with a long orchestra introduction depicting (not too literally) a sunrise and flows into the song, which is a love declaration to the waking lover.

CommentsStargazing grows from a simple circular melody into a vast orchestral canvas supporting a soprano vocalese. Gradually, the texure, tempo, rhythmic complexity increase as the melody transforms into a splendid wordless aria to the stars.
