About Orchestralist

ORCHESTRALIST is an international forum for conductors, composers, players, and their colleagues in the orchestra business. The pages that follow provide details on subscribing and choosing email options and using Orchestralist.

Discussion on Orchestralist ranges over a variety of topics of interest to orchestra professionals. Those encouraged to participate include: (1) conductors of professional, college or community orchestras that perform standard repertory (including choral-orchestral music and opera); (2) musicians who play in such orchestras; (3) composers who write music for such orchestras. Also invited to participate are publishers, administrators, board members, scholars, patrons, and artists-in-training.

The Orchestralist consists of an email forum and a separate web site containing wide ranging information and links re the orchestra field. The forum may be accessed fully online at our groups.io home page, whilst message sending can also be done from your own email client.

The Orchestralist web site, separate from our group's online home, offers additional resources. The Orchestralist web site features an online registry of orchestral music, and comprehensive links to resources around the world, including the sites of many Orchestralist subscribers. The site, created originally by conductor Alton Thompson, earned critical praise from Symphony, the official magazine of the American Symphony Orchestra League (now, the League of American Orchestras).

The Orchestralist web site is hosted by Herb Gellis, founder and former manager of the Hewlett-Packard Symphony Orchestra and the South Bay Philharmonic, and owner of sheet music publisher Harmonic Services Group. Conductor Alton Thompson was the former web maestro and designed Orchestralist's first website.

The Orchestralist group online home is the online web page hosted by groups.io which contains our complete message archive, member subscription options, and all things associated with the orchestralist forum. Although you can communicate with the list, and set basic subscription options for yourself just by sending email to the group, there are more detailed features that can only be activated or viewed online. For a summary of these features, please check our Orchestralist System Pages.

The Orchestralist email is delivered free of charge and we maintain a searchable archive of Orchestralist posts. The List Moderator and Subscriptions Manager today is Deana Wagoner, flutist. Mark Gresham, composer, helps out as moderator and technical guru as needed. Andrew Levin holds the life title of List Ma Laureate.

Orchestralist, the brainchild of Andrew Levin of Clemson University in South Carolina, went online on 28 September 1994 with fewer than thirty participants. Today the sun never sets on Orchestralist. The forum serves well over a thousand subscribers in every region of the world: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Latvia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Yugoslavia. Discussions regularly spawn successful, long-lasting professional collaborations between performers and composers.
