Deep Woods: The Unicorn Sings to Memory

InstrumentationSoprano and string orchestra, with featured solo viola
Lengthca. 11 minutes
DifficultyProfessional for the soprano; strings parts are probably within reach of a good college or community group.
CommentsDeep Woods is a setting of a poem by Peter Beagle, best known as the author of the beloved fantasy novel and animated film The Last Unicorn. The poem is the thoughts of that same unicorn, many years after the events of the novel, and explores very human universal themes of love, sorrow and loss.

The music, contemporary tonal in language, follows a trajectory from calm through a cathartic eruption of emotion to a devastating realization of the finality of loss.
