Comments | appropriate for amateur, youth as well as professional orchestras. This work uses a variety of styles to serve as a back-drop to the civil-war poem of the same name by Walt Whitman. The vocal soloist should have a strong, dramatic voice. |

Shiva Tandava (Dance Suite for Orchestra)
Instrumentation | chamber orchestra: 2222; 2221; timp, perc (2); strings. |
Length | 12 minutes |
Difficulty | moderate/difficult |
Comments | appropriate semi-professional and professional orchestras. The more difficult parts of this work fall on the percussionists' shoulders; the work as a whole is easily held together with a good conductor. This work is based in Indian music and is a programmatic tale of the Hindu god Shiva's awakening and incendiary dance called the ananda tandava. Very catchy, with tabla-like percussion parts. Could easily be used in dance/ballet scenarios. |
