Steel Point

Instrumentation2,2,2,2 2,2,0,0 1 perc. 6,4,4,3,1 percussion: timp, SD, BD, xyl, chimes, tamtam
Length8 mins
Difficultymoderate, but completely separate string parts
CommentsDrawn from an impression of the life of Stalin, though without attempting to be programmatic, the piece uses, as a principal theme, a melancholy Georgian religious lament representing Stalin's own ethnicity, which he sought so viciously to suppress in others. The spatial movement of sound is explored and many of the events are placed melodically and harmonically using stochastics. The piece has an overall tonal feel, though large slabs sound chaotic. The opening section features a rather nice bassoon solo.

HistoryDerived from an enormous work STEEL, with 6 amplified voices. STEEL POINT has not yet been performed, however the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra has offered to workshop the piece. So, hopefully, soon a recording will be available for perusal. It is my intention to develop this work further with larger instrumentation, as was the original concept, and to reincorporate the vocal sections.

DifficultyModerate - lots of divisi string writing, but rhythms are simple.
CommentsSort of a cross between Vaughan-Williams and Xenakis in style. Programmatic work based on a story from the Mabinogion, the book of Welsh mythology, and the nature of dreaming. Full programme notes are available on request from the composer.

HistoryThe piece was written as part of the 1996 Australian Composers' Orchestral Forum, in which 6 composers were selected (nationally) to write for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Four of these were selected for performance at the end of a week-long workshop with the orchestra in Hobart in December, 1996. The concert, on December 6, was recorded by the ABC for national broadcast on ABC Classic FM on May 14, 1997.

Hawkesbury Anthem

Instrumentation2,2,2,2 4,2,2,0 timp. perc.(with kit) strings
Length6 minutes
DifficultyIntermediate - some exposed solo passages, especially trumpet
CommentsWritten as an anthem for the Hawkesbury area, on the NW fringe of Sydney, Australia. The piece is very tuneful and audience-firendly. It employs a drum kit in the noisy bits. Most of the orchestra get an opportunity to feature. It is suitable for a good amateur or professional orchestra.

It has been developed from one section of my Fiddle Mass, for solo fiddle and string orchestra, which has featured as part of the Hawkesbury National Fiddle Festival, held in Richmond, NSW.

Fiddle Mass

InstrumentationString orchestra and solo violin
Length18 mins
DifficultyIntermediate
CommentsSuitable for a student ensemble. Written to accompany the Passion Sunday Mass, but suitable for any occasion. The piece is modelled on Cape Breton Is. fiddle tune sets, although all the tunes are original. Consequently, it is strongly rhythmic, although a range of emotional states is explored.
