Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra

Instrumentation3232-4331-Timp, 4 Perc-Hp-Stgs-Solo Trb
Length24'
DifficultyChallenging for orchestra, Very demanding for soloist, although without extended techniques
CommentsIn an eclectic style, three movements, med. fast-slow-fast. Could be considered as closer to a Symphony for Trombone and Orchestra, due to the close involvement between the soloist and orchestra.

WATER

Instrumentation2222-4231-Timp, 3 Perc.-Stgs
Lengthca. 17'
DifficultyWATER was commissioned and written specifically to introduce contemporary techniques and notations to high-school age musicians at an appropriate technical level. Also readily performable by college and community orchestras.
CommentsThe piece, titled WATER, is a brilliant solution to the challenge offered in the commission. In addition to being a strong concert work that I'm sure will be popular with audiences, WATER is a cleverly designed teaching tool for student-musicians. It includes no less than twenty-five modern techniques. Each section in the orchestra is requires to produce unique colors and textures. The work also includes challenging mixed meters and aleatoric writing. The work truly draws the orchestra close to the contemporary composition process. What is more, WATER is a fun and exciting piece to prepare and was received and performed with great enthusiasm by the Eugene Youth Symphony." - Richard M. Long, Music Director, Eugene Youth Symphony Association
